GHS launches second cycle of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention campaign


The Wa Municipal Health Directorate, in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Program and Ghana Health Service (GHS), has started the second cycle of Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC).


SMC is endorsed by the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health to reduce malaria cases and deaths in Africa by approximately 90 percent.


The antimalarial drugs are given to children between 3 and 59 months old. The campaign will run for five days, from Wednesday, July 31st to Sunday, August 4th, 2024, in the Wa Municipality and the Upper West Region.


“The Municipality achieved 95.84 registration coverage and 99.72 dosing coverage for cycle one (1) campaign.”


Train Community Health Volunteers and some Health staff would enter every house to administer the antimalarial medicine to eligible children. Each eligible child is to will receive three doses of the malaria drugs for three consecutive days.


The Wa Municipal Health Directorate in a statement signed by the Municipal Health Director, Dr Alex Bapula, encouraged “mothers, parents, caregivers, and guardians to comply and avail their children to receive these antimalarial drugs to reduce malaria cases and deaths.”
