GAMLS Executives handing over donations to prison officers

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) in the Upper West Region has marked this year’s International Medical Laboratory Science Day with a donation to the Wa Central Prison.

The event was held under the theme “Evidence-Based Medicine: The Role of Medical Laboratory Scientists.”

As part of the celebration, the Association donated items including a bag of maize, a bag of rice, three packs of toilet rolls, detergents, and bags of sachet water to support the upkeep of inmates.

In addition, the medical laboratory scientists conducted free health screenings for both inmates and some prison officers.

The GAMLS team conducted a comprehensive health screening exercise for both inmates and prison officers, targeting five key health conditions: diabetes, hepatitis B and C, malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV.

Mr. Michael Amoah Gyansah, Chairman of GAMLS in the Upper West Region, emphasized the importance of extending healthcare services to underserved populations.

"Early detection saves lives. That’s why we’re here to ensure no one is left behind, even behind bars.”

As part of the program, Dr. Robert Nuoh, an epidemiologist, delivered an educational talk on Meningitis (CSM), explaining its causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

Deputy Chief Prison Officer (DCP) Joseph Kpiriko, Public Relations Officer of the Upper West Regional Prison Service, expressed gratitude to the Association for their gesture.

"We are deeply grateful to the Medical Laboratory Scientists for this noble initiative. Our infirmary is staffed with capable personnel, but we often lack the medications and equipment needed to provide full care.”
