The Gakaar community in the Sawla Tuna Kalba district is grappling with challenges stemming from inadequate infrastructure, particularly the absence of reliable roads connecting them to neighbouring communities.
Despite active participation in democratic processes by voting in elections, residents feel their concerns are being overlooked by successive governments.
In an interview with Info Radio, community members expressed their frustration regarding the ongoing neglect from officials in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district. They revealed that they have repeatedly requested the construction of a road linking Gakaar to the nearby Vondiel community, but those pleas seem to have gone unheard.
The lack of proper road access has dire implications for the community, especially concerning maternal health. Women voiced their fears and frustrations as many have experienced the tragic consequences of this infrastructure deficit.

According to residents in the community, numerous women have lost their lives during childbirth because they could not reach healthcare facilities in Gindabuo or Tuna due to poor road conditions.
Several women expressed that being transported under critical conditions on poorly maintained roads is a traumatic experience. They urged the district assembly to urgently rehabilitate these roads to ensure safe access to healthcare for expectant mothers.
