The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) has said the free flow of information from service providers to consumers is vital in the delivery of public utility services.
Mr Mohammed Adams Suleman, the Upper West Regional Public Relations Officer of the commission said this in an interview with Info Radio during its morning conversation, Zienyaaye Upper West.
He said information flow enables both service providers and customers to efficiently play their relative roles for a smooth service delivery.
He said the PURC ensures that service providers inform the consuming public on issues regarding the services such as maintenance works.
The Regional Manager of the PURC, Mr Jojo Antwi added that the commission has taken it a responsibility to educating the public on what they need to know about the services they subscribe to, as well as what to expect from their service providers.
He noted that the commission conducts investigations to ascertain the veracity of complaints brought before it and consequently gets service providers to fix same.
On electricity, the Manager indulges the public to bear with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), a subsidiary of the Volta River Authority (VRA) in times where they have to put out lights in order to conduct maintenance and upgrading works.
He shot down the notion that the NEDCo deliberately puts out lights saying that, they are in business and would not do any such thing to undermine their income flow.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) was established in October 1997 under the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538) as a multi-sector regulator to regulate the provision of electricity and water utility services. The establishment of the Commission was part of the Government of Ghana’s utility sector reform process.
By virtue of the Energy Commission Act, 1997 (Act 541) PURC also regulates transportation of natural gas services.
