The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Upper West Region has organized a blood donation exercise to help augment the blood unit of the Regional Health Directorate.
The two day exercise, which was done on Wednesday July 28 and Thursday July 29, 2021, saw staff of the FDA, Ghana Health Service (GHS) and other departments and agencies as well some Senior High Schools donating blood.
Mr Albert Ankomah, the Upper West Regional Head of the FDA who revealed this to Info radio said 148 pints of blood was donated and handed over to the Ghana health services.
He said the FDA could not achieve its target of 200 pounds of blood due to factors including the incessant rain on Wednesday and break of the first and second year students from school.
Mr Alhassan Abdul Nasir, a medical laboratory scientist at the Upper West Regional Hospital commended the FDA for organizing the blood donation exercise to support the health facilities to save lives.
He encouraged other individuals and organizations to emulate the good gesture to help save the lives of the others.
He explained that the hospital, and for that matter the region is in dire need of blood at the blood bank to meet the health need of the clients.
Mr Nasir also encouraged individual to make voluntary blood donation a habit, and said regular voluntary blood donors are given cards which will enable them to be attended to in times of need when they need blood at the facility for themselves or their relatives.
The theme for this year’s blood donation was “Donate Blood and Safe Lives”.
