Farmers in Upper West Region advised to diversify to drought tolerant crops

Osman Tahiru Kaapore

Mr Abu Hudu, the Upper West Regional Director for Agriculture, has admonished farmers in the region to begin shifting their attention towards using drought-tolerant crops to improve their yields.

According to him, the recent dry spell in the region indicates that farmers should embrace new technologies and improved seeds. The Upper West Region is reeling from a severe dry spell that has left farmers counting their losses.

Mr Hudu, speaking to Info Radio in Wa, also advised farmers to desist from farming at the source of water bodies.

"I strongly advise farmers to explore the use of drought-tolerant seeds, which can withstand dry spells and minimize crop losses. This is a crucial step towards building resilience in our agricultural practices.

"It's essential that farmers avoid cultivating land at the source of water bodies. Continuous farming in these areas can lead to soil erosion, sedimentation, and reduced water retention capacity, ultimately causing the water bodies to dry up prematurely," he stated.

He expressed hope that some farmers may still have a good harvest despite the prolonged drought. According to him, farmers whose crops have not passed the fertilizer application state can apply immediately following the rainfall.
