The Lawra Municipal Assembly (LMA) has secured an amount of GH₵1,236,314.00 for development initiatives in the municipality after it passed the District Assembly Performance Assessment Tool (DPAT) for the year 2020 with a total score of 91 per cent.
The amount comprised GH₵1,181,936.00 grants for investment and GH₵54,378.00 as capacity grants.
Mr Jacob Domekakpier Dery, the Lawra Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), revealed this in his address to the LMA during its first general assembly meeting last Thursday.
He commended the staff of the assembly and the Assembly Members for their contribution in diverse ways to ensure the assembly passed the assessment.
The MCE indicated that some projects had so far been selected and submitted to the DPAT secretariat of the Ministry of Local Government for consideration to pave way for implementation.
“Be rest assured that my staff and I are servants of the people of the Municipality and you (Assembly Members) being the representatives of the people, we will continue to collaborate to serve the best interest of the people you represent”, Mr Dery explained.
He, therefore, appealed to the Assembly Members to assist the secretariat in the 2021 DPAT assessment process when the need arises.
On security, the MCE indicated that the Lawra Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) had put in stringent measures to safeguard the municipality against the threat of terrorism due to its proximity to neighbouring Burkina Faso where a number of terrorist attacks had been recorded.
Mr Dery said as part of the measures, the assembly had engaged religious leaders, the leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), women, and youth groups among others to sensitise them to the eminent threat of terrorism.
He also urged the people in the municipality to be on the lookout for suspicious characters and activities in the municipality and to report same to the security agencies for the needed action to be taken saying “Security is a shared responsibility.”
Talking about health, Mr Dery said the assembly had released an amount of GH₵2,500.00 to the Municipal Health Directorate to support malaria prevention interventions in the municipality as malaria cases topped OPD admissions in the municipality.
