Delay in Appointing MMDCEs Retrogressing Development

The Executive Director for Community Development Alliance (CDA) Mr Issifu Kanton says the government’s delay in appointing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives for the various assemblies is adversely retrogressing development in the country .

According to him, the country is operating a governance system where MMDCEs are the pivot around which the activities of the assemblies revolved and that all activities of the assemblies had come to a stand-still due to the lack of substantive MMDCEs.

Mr Kanton said this in an interview with Info Radio in Wa on Friday. Mr. Kanton said he could not fathom why after eight months when a sitting president handed over power to himself, MMDCES are still not appointed.

To him , allowing the current MMDCEs to act for a very long time have the could result in some MMDCEs siphoning and exploiting the assembly’s resources through any means since they are unsure whether they would be retained or not.

He cited some Districts and Municipalities in the Upper West Region where some MDCEs are reportedly accused of exploiting innocent people just to enrich themselves before they leave office.

Mr Kanton explained that currently the Assemblies are in limp mode due to the lack of substantive MMDCEs who could have facilitated the activities of the assemblies.

According to him the District Assemblies Common Funds are also not released by the central government to MMDAs due to the lack of substantive MMDCEs and the assemblies not properly constituted.

Mr. Kanton therefore appeal to the president to expedite action in appointing MMDCEs who are capable of spearheading rapid development in their respective areas.
