The Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD) is set to organize a significant capacity-building workshop titled "Ghana's Affirmative Action Law: Empowering Traditional Women Leaders and Queens" on November 8th, 2024, at the Delagio Hotel in Wa. The workshop aims to equip traditional women leaders with vital knowledge and skills to effectively engage in promoting gender equality and to leverage the newly passed Affirmative Action Law within their communities.
The Affirmative Action Law, which marks a pivotal advancement in gender equality in Ghana, provides a legal framework that enhances women's representation in governance and decision-making roles across the country. CIKOD has been at the forefront of this movement since 2010, working closely with the National House of Chiefs to elevate the status of traditional women leaders, including queens, in governance and community development.
As Ghana embarks on the implementation of this landmark law, traditional women leaders stand in a unique position to drive change and advocate for women's rights within their communities. The workshop is expected to provide traditional women leaders with the necessary tools and insights to understand the provisions of the Affirmative Action Law and to facilitate its objectives effectively.
"The passage of the Affirmative Action Law is an historic milestone for gender equality in Ghana, and this workshop creates a vital opportunity for traditional women leaders to champion its goals," said Daniel Banuoku, Deputy Executive Director of a CIKOD in a statement to Info Radio. "Our objective is to enhance their understanding of the law and empower them with actionable strategies for effective advocacy."
Participants for the workshop will include traditional women leaders and queens from the Upper West Region, representatives from CIKOD and the National House of Chiefs, as well as gender advocates from various organizations.
The workshop will include interactive presentations, panel discussions, group work, and plenary sessions, providing a platform for meaningful exchange of ideas among participants. Noteworthy speakers will include Dr. Constance Akurugu, Saeed Abdul Shakur, and Eunice Kaminta, who will engage in a panel discussion alongside live radio broadcasts to promote wider community awareness.
