CIKOD Launches Ambassador Program in Six Schools to Promote Local Food Consumption

The Centre for Indigenous Knowledge and Organizational Development (CIKOD) on Friday 4.10.2024 at the Upper West Regional Library in Wa officially launched its Ambassador initiative at six schools with the aim of encouraging the consumption of local foods.

This initiative is part of the "Transforming the African Food System to Sustainability" (TAFS) project, under the theme "My Food is African," which strives to revive the practice of eating indigenous foods. This effort is supported by 25 African nations as part of a Pan-African campaign, focused on reshaping how communities in Ghana perceive and interact with their native food resources.

CIKOD emphasizes that educating the youth about the significance of local food is crucial to this transformation. At the launch event, Deputy Executive Director Mr. Daniel Faabelangne Banuoku urged the newly appointed Ambassadors to embrace their responsibilities with courage, acknowledging that the journey ahead would be challenging.

Wa Municipal Nutrition Officer Madam Esther Piesie praised the Ambassadors for their advocacy against the consumption of Maggi cubes, urging healthier choices.

The Wa Municipal Education Director Madam Sophia Dimah also raised concerns about the growing trend of ignoring local foods in favor of foreign options.

The selected schools for this initiative include Beverly Hills Academy, Ancilla Basic School, Dan-Ibu International School, and Wa Model Basic School and other schools in the Wa Municipaility .
