The Catholic Diocese of Wa has launched a bold initiative to combat plastic waste and protect the environment, emphasizing that everyone has a crucial role to play in proper waste disposal.
Ms Doreen Damah, a member of the Plastic Waste Management Project committee, highlighted the devastating effects of plastic pollution on the environment.
She explained that clogged drainage systems are causing flooding and poor water flow, while contaminated land is making farming increasingly difficult.
"Managing and gathering plastics will not only protect the environment but also create jobs for the youth in the region," she noted.
Rev. Fr. John Bosco Eledi, the Wa Diocesan Development Officer reinforced the urgency of addressing the plastic waste crisis, stressing that blocked drainage prevents water from nourishing the soil, leading to drought and flooding.
"We must act now to protect our land and future," he urged.
In response, the youth of the Catholic Diocese of Wa have taken a proactive step by collecting and recycling plastic waste across the Upper West Region. Their efforts aim to restore the environment and create economic opportunities for young people.
