Azumah Resources Ghana Limited, a mineral exploration company in the Upper West Region, has donated over 8000 reading materials to selected basic schools in the Jirapa and Nadowli-Kaleo districts.
The reading materials included English, science, mathematics, and novels. Over 2800 school children in Nadowli R/C Primary, Nadowli Junior High, Charikpong, Takpo, Kalsegra, Nanga Primary, and Ganaa basic schools are expected to benefit from the donation.
The donation was in partnership with Rainbow Foundation, a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) through Azumah’s School Library Project in the selected basic schools.
In a short ceremony in Nadowli on Thursday, October 10, 2024, to hand over the books to the Ghana Education Service for onward distribution to the beneficiaries' schools, Mr Solomon Dery, the Senior Community Relations Manager of the company explained the rationale behind the donation.
“Despite our focus is to look for gold, the welfare of our communities is of interest to the company, particularly education. So, education is one of the key pillars of the company’s Corperate Social Responsibility (CSR)”
He mentioned that some selected teachers from the chosen schools also received training in effective library management.
Mr Hector Nyinaku, the Country Administration Manager of Azumah Resources Ghana Ltd, stated that the company has been supporting education in their operational area as part of its corporate social responsibility.
He noted that the company has been supporting education in their operational area. Underscoring the significance of reading, he said, “If you know how to read, then all subjects will be easy, even mathematics.”
Mr Martin Tang, the Deputy Director of Supervision at the Nadowli Kaleo District Education Directorate, commended Azumah Resources for the donation. He urged the students and the teachers to utilize the books effectively.
Yuori B. Ebenezer, the Parents' Association (P/A) Chairman for Ganaa Primary School in the Jirapa Municipality, commended Azumah Resources Ltd and its partners for the donation, assuring that parents would ensure that the books are used for the benefit of the children.
Mr Martin Yiripare, the Accounts and Finance Manager at the Jirapa Municipal Education Directorate, admonished the school children to make good use of the books.
He appealed to the teachers not to prevent the children from using the books privately, but rather to guide them and ensure that they return the books to the library after use.
