The Assembly Member for the Samatigu Electoral Area in the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Ms. Millicent Zuuri, has organized a community durbar to raise awareness among residents about maternity-related deaths.
The durbar aimed to educate the community about this crucial issue and welcomed participants from three communities within her electoral area.
According to Ms. Zuuri, she has observed that some pregnant women in the area have lost their lives due to a lack of antenatal care. She further noted that children have also died as a result of insufficient maternal healthcare.
In an interview with Info Radio at the event, Madam Zuuri emphasized the importance of the durbar in discussing maternity deaths and ways to prevent them.
“There have been instances where women in this community give birth, and the babies do not survive. So it dawned on me that as an Assembly Member, I have to take measures to ensure that my people get the required knowledge to care for themselves during pregnancy. So, I collaborated with the community nurses to organise this community durbar.”
Ms. Zuuri used the opportunity to educate the community members about the negative effects of gender-based violence.
She encouraged the community members to report cases of gender-based violence to the appropriate authorities, stressing that everyone has a role to play in preventing this menace.
