Assembly member calls for division of Piiyiri Electoral Area due to overwhelming size

Hon Ninfaazuma Benedict-Piiyiri Assembly Member

The Assembly for Piiyiri Electoral Area and Presiding Member for the Jirapa Municipal Assembly, Mr Ninfaazuma Benedict, has called on the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development and the Electoral Commission (EC) to divide the Piiyiri Electoral Area into two due to the large size of the area.

According to him, the large size of the Electoral Area has made it very difficult for one assembly member to handle. He noted that lobbying for development to reach the twelve (12) communities with about ten thousand (10,000) residents has been tedious.

Mr Benedict spoke to Info Radio at Wuoyiri in Jirapa on the Zienyaaye Upper West program last Friday. He mentioned that he has written appeal letters to the Electoral Commission (EC) requesting them to consider splitting the Electoral Area into two.

“In terms of population, we are many due to the geographical location of the electoral area. We are close to 7000 or even 10000 because the electoral area has twelve (12) communities. If you come to the Jirapa Municipality and you are looking for electoral areas that are large and need splitting, the Piiyiri electoral area is one.

"It is not easy to extend development to the entire area. Usually, when you lobby for projects, you can get one project, and you have 12 communities under your care; that is not an easy task," Mr Benedict stated.

He mentioned that he has written to the Electoral Commission in 2019 during his first tenure requesting for the area to be split into two. He expressed hopes that anytime the EC is creating new electoral areas, the Piiyiri Electoral area will be considered.

Mr Benedict also highlighted some developmental projects undertaken by the government in the last seven years in the Electoral Area.

He pointed out that prior to 2019; the Electoral Area lacked a structured layout and was difficult to access. However, now it has a well-planned layout with open access roads connecting the communities. Mr. Benedict also noted that several boreholes have been drilled to provide clean drinking water for some communities.

Mr Benedict has appealed to the government to extend electrification to some parts of the area that do not have electricity. He stated that some two communities do not have electricity entirely while the rest need extension.

He mentioned that some communities have witnessed some expansion and thus need electricity extension to the new areas.

Some electorates also share their development challenges with Info Radio. They mentioned youth unemployment, lack of toilet facilities and the inefficiency of the National Health Insurance Scheme as some of their challenges. They appealed to the government to come to their aid by addressing these challenges.
