The residents of Jolinyiri in the Kojokperi South Electoral Area of the Daffiama-Bussie Issa District are concerned about the delayed commissioning of their gari processing factory.
The factory is part of the government's one-district, one-factory initiative under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. According to the government's performance tracker, the factory is 95 percent completed.
Construction began in 2018 with an expected completion date in 2020. Local residents have faced challenges as they harvested more cassava than they could process. This led to some of the cassava spoiling and being discarded.
There is growing skepticism among the residents that the government has misled them regarding the factory.
Mr. Clement Issahaku, a resident, expressed disappointment, saying, "Talking about the gari factory, I think the government has deceived us. We have only the building, but what would make us call it a factory is not there."
He highlighted the need for essential facilities such as electricity and water for the factory to be operational.
Another resident, Madam Hajara Sidik, mentioned that the community had been informed about the construction of the factory and that it was subjected to a test run for a day, but there has been no further communication from the government.
The delay in the factory's operation has left some residents disheartened, as they anticipated that it would create business opportunities for the youth and women in the community.
