President Nana Akufo-Addo has granted executive approval for the Wa municipality in the Upper West Region to be upgraded to metropolitan status.
This decision was announced by the Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah in a statement on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
This decision aligns with Act 936, which governs local government structures in Ghana and comes in response to a request from the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development (MLGDRD).
Three (3) other municipalities, Ho, Sunyani and New Juaben South have been upgraded to metropolitan status.
The President also upgraded three (3) districts, Offinso North, Birim North and Karaga districts to municipality status.
“Accordingly, the following Municipal and District Assemblies are duly upgraded pending finalisation of all necessary legal and administrative processes,” the statement concluded.
