22 Farmers Recognized With Awards in Wa East District


In the celebration of the District version of the 37th National Farmers’ Day in the Wa East District, twenty one farmers were awarded for their exceptional and gallant contribution in the production of food, fish and animals.


Tahiru Iddrisu from the host community, Kulkpong was crowned the Overall Best Farmer of the district. He was presented with a Tricycle, knapsack sprayer, insecticides, wellington boots and three cutlasses.


Addressing the media, Mr. Tahiru Iddrisu, who was crowned the District Chief Farmer for the Wa East District for 2021 farming season, after expressing his profound gratitude for the honor done him, appealed to his colleague farmers in the district to embrace agriculture.


According to him, agriculture has shifted from subsistence purposes to a lucrative venture.


The 1st Runner Up Farmer goes to Daban Amoah from Grumbelle who goes home with V.G.L. Okada 125 Motorbike, one knapsack sprayer, a pair of wellington boot, cutlasses, agro-chemicals, and a certificate.


The 2nd Runner Up goes to a Female Farmer; Madam Comfort Bayong from Jumo who goes home three with a Luoja Motorbike, Wellington boot, three cutlasses, agro-chemicals and a certificate.


Addressing the Chiefs and people at the event, the Wa East District Director of Agriculture, Madam Mavis Darigubah expressed the need for farmers in the district to invest more into agriculture for sufficient production in order to ensure sufficient food security for local consumption and export.


She prides the Wa East District as the food basket of the Upper West Region.


The District Chief Executive, Hon. Dr. Suleman Ewurah Kandia Mahama, appeals to staff of the Agric Directorate in the district to sensitize and encourage farmers to embrace the use of Agricultural Insurance Policies, stating that, with such insurance policies, the adverse effects of natural disasters such as the 2021 year flooding could be deadened.


He lamented the devastation caused by floods to farmers and their investment in the 2021 year of review.


The DCE while calling on the farmers to adopt emerging agricultural technologies to boost their yield, he also celebrated the successes chalked by government’s interventions in the agricultural sector.


National Farmers’ Day is a day set aside to celebrate and recognized farmers across the country for their immense contribution towards the nation’s food security.


Every first Friday of December is set for all this important occasion across the country, where deserving and illustrious farmers and fishers are awarded in recognition of their efforts in feeding the nation and ensuring the prosperity and growth of the nation. It was introduced by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in 1985.
